Another facet of bonsai is accent planting. This is the creation of little communities of plants that will grow naturally together and offer more than one season of interest.
The challenge is to choose plants with similar growing conditions, different flowering seasons, leaf forms and heights. Finding interesting ceramics in which to plant is also fun.
There is another school of kusamono (the Japanese term for this) where these little gardens are planted into soil balls covered in moss. They look great when done well.
