Photographer:- Mike Smith Photographer: - Mike Smith Foliage colour extends the season of interest and adds another dimension when choosing subject matter for bonsai. This tree was brought as a small 3 year old sapling and then grown on in the ground for a few years. It was then lifted and placed into a plant pot for the roots to recover over a couple of growing seasons. Eventually, it was transferred to this bonsai pot. Sometimes, these red leafed maples are planted in blue glazed pots to contrast the colours. As with many things in art, it is all a matter of taste. My next tasks is to improve the branch structure by a process of selective pruning. This done by allowing branches to extend and then pruning back to 3 buds. Copyright: - Mike Smith
