Fagus are large deciduous trees with smooth grey bark, ovate leaves colouring well in autumn, and inconspicuous flowers followed by usually spiny fruits.
F. sylvatica is a large, vigorous deciduous tree with a broad, spreading crown. Leaves broadly elliptic, yellow-green in spring, rich russet-brown in autumn. Flowers small, green, followed by bristly fruits.
Pruning
These evergreen shrubs and deciduous trees and certain deciduous shrubs need very little pruning and are best left to their own devices in most cases. They do not send out vigorous shoots that need curbing. Remove diseased , damaged congested or crossing shoots. Shoots that are growing in unwanted directions can also be pruned out. Do this in late winter or early spring, unless late summer or early autumn pruning is specified to avoid bleeding and facilitate rapid healing of cut surfaces. These plants flower on previous or current year's growth.
Pests Aphids and beech bark scale may be a problem.
Diseases May be affected by coral spot and heart and root rot in mature trees.
